Main attractions
Victoria Memorial – This is a beautiful specimen of Victorian architecture that was built to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Its marble structure is believed to have been modeled on the Taj Mahal.
Eden Gardens – In a cricket crazy nation, Eden Gardens holds pride of place as the country’s oldest cricket ground, which came into existence with the formation of the Calcutta Eden Gardens Cricket Club in 1864.
Howrah Bridge – This cantilever bridge that was built in 1874 is a landmark of Kolkata. It connects the city to Howrah on the other side and has the distinction of having been built without the use of nuts and bolts.
Indian Museum – This old museum is the largest in the country with the best collection of Indian natural history and art in the world.
Best time to visit
Kolkata is at its best, weather-wise, from October to March. October is also a festive season that coincides with Durga Puja, an important festival.
